| Environmentally Friendly Design One of the world's most energy-efficient desktop computer, the Mac mini is also highly recyclable and requires even less packaging than before. The power supply for the Mac mini has been reduced from 110W to 85W and is now up to 90 percent efficient. Lower power consumption reduces energy bills and lessens the environmental impact of greenhouse gas emissions from power plants. A built-in power supply means no plastic housing, less weight, and less cable clutter. It also allows Mac mini to take up 20 percent less space and fit into smaller packaging. The Mac mini is also a great example of Apple's energy-efficient design philosophy. It uses less than 10 watts of power when idle â a 25 percent reduction from the previous generation. That's something no other desktop computer can do. And the new Mac mini retail packaging is 35 percent smaller than the previous version. In addition, the mass of the shipping box has decreased by 15 percent. Which is better for the planet and means a smaller carbon footprint. It's one seemingly minor change. But it has a major positive impact on our environment. ENERGY STAR Qualification The Mac mini meets the stringent low power requirements set by the EPA, giving it ENERGY STAR qualification. ENERGY STAR 5.0 sets significantly higher efficiency limits for power supplies and aggressive limits for the computer's typical annual power consumption. Mac mini doesn't just meet the ENERGY STAR requirements, it meets them with an 80 percent margin. EPEAT Gold Rating Through its innovative and environmentally friendly design, Mac mini has earned the highest rating of EPEAT Gold. The Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool, or EPEAT, evaluates the environmental impact of a product based on how recyclable it is, how much energy it uses, and how it's designed and manufactured.

Powerful machine and great to work with June 17, 2010 Brian Stucki (Las Vegas, NV) 53 out of 57 found this review helpful
We've already put these new minis thru the paces here at Macminicolo and they're great. A few things to know:
-The RAM on these minis is VERY easy to upgrade. This machine comes with 2GB but can be upgraded to 8GB. Just twist off the bottom with your fingers and replace the RAM. (Literally, no tools required.)
- If you're looking to use the Mac mini connected to your TV, you'll be glad to hear that it now comes with HDMI. Nearly every current HDTV should have HDMI and it's a great fit.
- Speaking of TV watching, the new GPU (video card) is great. A wonderful upgrade.
- This Mac mini was reduced in power consumption AND the power brick is now internal instead of the big external one from before. That makes for a cleaner looking hookup.
- We use all our Mac minis as servers here and they're great. They run 24 hours a day and have no problems.
- This machine still has the IR capability so it can be controlled with the Apple Remote or one of the Harmony remotes with no problems.
All in all, a good upgrade.
Very Impressive Little Guy! June 22, 2010 B. Miller (Pittsburgh, PA) 26 out of 29 found this review helpful
The new Mac Mini has been an impressive little beast so far!
It sits on your desk and looks so small, yet it packs a powerful punch inside.
I bought a Mini Displayport to VGA connector to integrate this into my KVM setup with the intention of only using it on one of my three monitors, and when I realized that I could also use the HDMI port to hook up a second monitor, it was like a new world.
The new Nvidia Graphics card handles my 24" and 22" monitors just fine.
I also picked up Parallels 5.0 software from Amazon as well, and I don't flinch when I say that this little Mac Mini is running Windows 7 Professional better than my Quad Core PC does!
I am also going to throw Ubuntu on here as well to play with.
The Snow Leopard install is very snappy, and opens programs and installs things in a breeze.
This little guy is also handling syncing to my iPad and iPhone like it was nothing, and it amazingly will handle multiple programs open with no problem.
This is actually the first Mac I have owned, and I am so impressed that I may be converted forever.
The SD card slot, HDMI, and new Graphics card is what really sets this apart from the older models.
The new case is also a very nice piece of engineering! I have no idea how they fit the power supply in there! No more power brick laying around on the floor!
So user friendly, and could be the pinnacle of a Home office or be a great HTPC in the living room!
An incredible little super machine! August 18, 2010 EskimoDude 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I researched the heck out of the mac mini. Once everything looked good I gave it the go. I have worked on macs at school, then worked solely on pc's at home. So I was finally able to buy one for school/freelancing (graphic/web design student).
(disclaimer here for pc user skeptics: Even though I think highly of mac's and their os interfaces, I am no mac but slave. This is so you can know that this review is coming from someone who has had experience in knowing the truth about macs and pc's. That they serve different purposes. Pc's are for server/standardized setups/do it yourself junkies (which I am :D), and macs are made to be real work horses for graphic/multimedia work. Everything about the os is made for a high productivity rate.)
Appearance: Just opening my amazon box to getting it all set up (which only took about 5 minutes) is just amazing even in it's presentation. Apple packages the product very nicely. The product is more beautiful than I had thought it was even from pictures all over the internet. It's so very small, and beautiful. I thought the older mac mini's were good looking, but this goes along with the stream lined look of the unibody mac's/macbooks.
Ports/jacks: The back of the machine is gorgeous as well, with the black face. HDMI is pretty cool, I do wish there were more ports on the back, but then again I don't mind at the same time because I got a D-link 4port powered usb hub where I plug most things in. I would actually suggest this to anyone as it not only saves the life of the mini's internal power supply, but also saves wear and tear of the usb ports on the back of the unit. Slot drive is awesome as well, no clunky tray slamming out like on my old 05 pc.
Setup: This mac is perfect for anyone who already has a keyboard/mouse/monitor. I would even recommend this to ANYONE not doing professional video editing for a living. This mac is plenty powerful for anyone's needs, and it is a SIGNIFICANT amount cheaper than any of the other macs, excluding macbooks ect. because if you need mobility, then you need mobility.
Performance: So far I have been nothing but impressed with this machine. My stats are the 2.4ghz processor with 2gb or ram. I have been able to run indesign, photoshop, flash music player, flash video, all in different spaces at the same time. And with all that it hasn't been laggy. Boots up in maybe 20-30 seconds, shuts down and goes to sleep almost instantly. For someone who only uses internet, word processors, photo, home video editing; I would say 2gb is fine. But if you are like me and use a lot of graphic intensive programs like me. You would want to slap in 4 or even 8gb of ram. I plan to put in 8 as I have a hobby of working with AfterEffects, and Premiere.
If anyone is curious, I have Adobe Master Collection installed on my mac mini, Have not noticed one bit of slow down with all those behemoth programs on the system. Also, if anyone is curious, I have not played around with premiere really yet on it, and have only spent about 10 minutes with after effects. To test it out, I opened a large complicated after effects file, and it did pretty well. I would seriously suggest though to anyone wanting to do heavy video editing that you install 8gb of ram. I would even say that you could use this machine as video student, if you have some patience. Think about it, people who were doing video editing professionally maybe 5 years ago were working on portable macbook systems that were not far off from the mac mini. If you really need a speedy machine on a budget, along with upgrading the ram, you could replace the internal 5400rpm drive with a 7200rpm or even solid state drive. Another option is to get an external firewire 7200rpm or solidstate drive for file working/scratch disk drive. Even with all that it would still be cheaper than other macs.
Other thoughts: I also have a pc, and now the mac mini. The mini is so small that I just put it on top of my desk right beside my monitor. Then I bought a trendnet kvm switch (base model). So now I can use one keyboard/mouse/monitor, and push one button to switch. Although ever since I got my mac, I have only used my pc for word, a couple games, not very often.
OSX: Love the user interface, the entire reason I bought a mac. Spaces, expose, and everything else makes osx highly productive. Took me awhile to learn how to install programs on a mac because it was so plain simple. Instead of going through tons of setup windows, you just drag the program icon into the applications folder and it's done. One step. The mini comes with iLife, which I have absolutely no need for. It gives you some basic programs to work with making a web site, photos, video, mail, garage band, calendar, ect. I Just don't use them because I am going into the field of graphic/web/multimedia, so I just use my kick-A Adobe master collection, lol. For anyone who is just a general user in these areas, they actually are pretty good, especially imovie which is so easy to use.
Conclusion:I have been so happy with my purchase. And if you're going to buy the base 2.4ghz model, you might as well buy it from amazon to save yourself the appletax price as well as regular tax and get free shipping as well! Great Deal. I would recommend this computer to anyone who is willing to try out the mac world, who is a graphic/media student, or to anyone making motion pictures, OBVIOUSLY. Great snappy little machine.
Amazon: as far as amazon on this purchase, Amazon exceeded my expectations by delivery. Arrived two weeks early! How's that for great service.
My First Mac July 13, 2010 Casey A. Fields (Lebanon, VA USA) 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
Let me start off by saying that I have been wanting a Mac for a long time now. I went to apple.com the other day and saw that they had updated the Mac Mini's and I had to check them out. After looking at them for about two days, I finally took the plunge, and I'm sure glad I did.
I was going to order one of these babies from apple.com so I could upgrade the RAM, because at first I was wondering how long I would want to deal with only 2gb of RAM. Well, after looking at prices, I realized that upgrading to 4gb of RAM now wasn't going to be any cheaper that if I wanted to wait and do it myself. So, after pricing this on apple.com even with my wifes $50.00 student discount, and counting in the thirty some dollars in tax that they were going to charge me, it was way cheaper to order the base model from amazon.com, with no tax and free two day shipping. So thanks Amazon for yet again another wonderful deal.
Now about the computer. This is my first mac and it hasn't taken me any time to figure out how to work this thing. If you have any general knowledge of a pc, you should be able to figure a mac out no problem. I have the mini hooked up to my 42" lcd tv via HDMI, and I couldn't be happier. At first, the resolution was set to 1080p and looked wonderful, but the text and pointer was way too small to read comforably from my couch, which is about 10-15 ft away from the tv. I finally changed the resolution to 1024x576 and that made the text the perfect size, and the tv is still reading that the display is in high definition. When I started the computer up, it connected to my Dell Blu-tooth wireless keyboard and mouse instantly. I was worried about this at first, but I didn't have any trouble at all.
So far, the performance is outstanding. It is a very speedy computer, even with the 2gb of ram. I tested it out by playing three videos at once, while I was browsing my photos with iphoto, and it never slowed down a bit. The mac is accepting everything I throw at it so far, including my external hard drives that are formatted for windows. I am able to view all of my pictures that are stored on them with no problem. Overall, I couldn't be happier with my purchase. I've only had it for a few days now but I can tell you that it is going to be well enjoyed. If you are un-sure about converting to the Apple side of things, this is your chance. This is the cheapest Mac you can buy, and it is still a workhorse.
Very nice evolution of the species July 12, 2010 Michael Shaffer (Littleton, CO United States) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is Mini number 3 for me. I purchased the first (and only) Motorola mini to use as a server and general workstation at home and liked it alot. About a year later, Apple switched to Intel and I snatched up the original Duo Mini and it's been my main machine since. It was limited to only 2GB of RAM, but other than that, it performed amazingly for the last 4 years. I push these little machines pretty hard for their class, as I do iMovie/iDVD/FCE work, plus Photoshop along with Eclipse for Java development. When Apple intro'd this latest model and it's capacity for 8GB RAM plus faster processors etc... I was all in. I have to say that it's been a great ride so far. On my previous Intel mini, I've replaced the RAM, the HD and the SuperDrive myself (got very good with a putty knife!) so I'm curious to see how easy that will be...someday. Love the memory upgrade panel on the bottom, my new memory is still in transit. With 2GB of RAM it runs just fine. My iMovie renders are cut to about half (down from a killer 8 hours to a still tough to endure 4 hours but half is still half). Hooked it up temporarily to my Vizio TV and this thing would make a killer Apple TV replacement. Front Row, Hulu Desktop and Boxee work fabulous. I'm curious to see what Apple is cooking up there. I like the internal power supply, no external brick. It's significantly quieter and even a little cooler when doing some long renders in iMovie/iDVD. I'm pleasantly surprised that the internal hard drive seems to be pretty speedy. It's listed as a 5400 rpm, but it outperforms my external Firewire drives (admittedly they are FW400) but I'm probably going to move the OS back to the internal drive.
All in all a great improvement to the Mini lineup. About my only gripe is that I was truly expecting life changing speeds, moving up from a 1.66 GHz Core Duo to a 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo with better graphics and all that. For the most part, it seems about as fast as my old one....but I'm betting that with 8GB of RAM things will rock a little bit. Naturally Amazon's service was first rate. Free shipping and no tax, plus a great price. We have multiple Apple stores in town and I could get a corporate discount through work or student discount through one of my daughter's colleges, but this was still the best price.
